Puked a motor!!! ARRGHH!!
Puked a motor!!! ARRGHH!!
Well, kinda...
Going up Jellico mtn on my way through Tennessee @ 6:30 Wednseday morning...my brother wakes me up "Hey, you're truck just lost oil pressure!!"
I'm awake then
, "WHAT!!" Pull it over, shut it down. Something had went wrong, and pumped all the oil out of it. We were five miles of downhill to the next exit, so I started it up and got to 65 and gicked in the Georgia OD. Rolled up to a gas station a killed it.
8QTS of oil later it's back to where it needed to be. No knocking, tapping, nothing. Turbo is FRIED!!! 3/16" of play in the shaft
. I think/hope that it sucked the oil out of the motor, and blew it into the intake (the whole intake side of the engine, hood, brake booster is covered in oil). I think what happened is that coming up that mountain when that trubo was working, the seal went out and started blowing oil past the top boot which was under pressure, and all over the truck.
I would have been watching the boost and pyro if I was driving, but I had switched about 50 miles earlier and was asleep
, and brother could care less about them
.
I'm gonna look closer at it this evening, and see if I can find something out. Probably try to fit an old tractor charger (T04 Garret, just a touch small probably
) on it and see what happens, like I said, it's not knocking or making any odd noises. I hope I didn't roast it, I can't afford the rebuild right now

Both my '95s came with an extra page stapled in the owners manual saying the 10 quarts listed in the manual is wrong. There was also a TSB for some trucks saying the wrong dipstick came with the trucks.
I've been using 12 quarts per change for the last 200k+ mainly so I don't have any left over in a gallon jug.

I wonder about that..
My truck, if filled to the top of the safe zone, will immediately eat oil until it's 1/4 inch down in the safe zone. Then it stops.
Called Cummins and they said "its Ok.. the engines find their own oil level".
Hmm.

UPDATE!!!
Here's an update for you guys...
Swaped chargers (Thanks Ian!!
) and put ~150mi on so far. All seems well.
No excessive oil leaks or consumption...no worse leaks than before, at least. Gonna keep running it this week and see what happens, if it all works this time next week I'm ordering a turbo and probably some piping
.
Then I need to find someone to swap the injection pumps and time it, and change/fix(???) the vaccum pump and I hope I'm done for a while...riiight!
Thanks for the comments,
Chris
