problems with shutoff solenoid adjustment

Whats the biggest problem if your fuel shutoff solenoid is out of adjustment? I discovered a problem with mine the other day. My truck wouldnt start, so i pushed the solenoid up all the way, and she fired right up. Everyonce in a while, it wont start until about the 3rd or 4th try. Im gonna check the measurement , but would there be any problems with performance, or mileage or something if it is out of adjustment?

Generally, the solenoids don't need adjustment. If pulling up on it fixes the problem, then I would highly doubt that it is adjusted wrong. The problem is probably either related to your solenoid being dirty or the relay. I would recommend pulling the boot off of the solenoid and cleaning the rod and oiling it well. Then, make sure that you put a good boot back on.

If the solenoid is adjusted too far up, the truck won't shut off. If it is too far down, you won't get full fuel so the truck will be low on power.

So would i have to take it off the truck? Would that alter where its adjusted when I put back on? I guess i would oil with WD-40 or something similiar. I'll try that out, thanks for the reply.

You can clean up and lube the solenoid in place but it may well be easier to just take it off. The solenoid has one wiring connector, has two bolts holding it down and a cotter pin attaching it to the fuel lever. None of these have any adjustment. Just be careful if you take it off to clean it that you don't loose any parts, there really isn't anything holding the plunger into the solenoid. Other than being in a confined space, I think that you will find that cleaning it isn't bad at all.

One note on wd40 is that since it isn't oil based, it evaporates. It is great for stopping annoying squeaks but doesn't work so well when corrosion prevention is an issue too. I would look for something else to use.
