Pretty Sure It's the Lift Pump....
...but need confirmation. As I got off the highway today the 96 lost a cylinder. I pulled away and it was losing power, then 1/2 mile further didn't have enough power to get out of its own way. Shut down and looked for leaks. Found none. Dead on side of road. My buddy towed me to his house and I got a broom stick and primed it. After cracking an injector line it started. Getting a bit of white smoke and at high RPM, no load, it still misses. After letting it idle a while it runs rougher and rougher, but if I pump the primer while it's idling it smoothes out the the RPM comes back up. Replaced the fuel filter and no difference.
I have heard about some screen(s) in the fuel heater that may be clogged, but from these symptoms, do you think it's the LP?
How do I get to these screens? Just pull the lines off, or should I be pullied the entire fuel heater off to examine it closely?
Thanks to RattlinRam for his assistance in searching here for ideas when I was not able to get Internet access earlier today.
Thanks,
Chris

Unless you're going to throw parts at it first step is to measure the fuel pressure. Instructions> https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...41&postcount=9
Could be the lift pump, overflow valve or clogged filters.
Pre-filter cleaning instructions> http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/filter/pre-filt_clean.htm

Thanks Bill. I have the FP gauge adapter from TST, and my FP kit. I plan to do that first, and I have found the pre-filter instructions mentioned in your link. I am pretty sure it isn't the overflwo valve as I pinched the return line with vise-grips yesterday and it made no difference. I will try it again today, when the gauge is hooked up, though.
I am going to Cummins today at lunch to pick up all parts, including the LP, so I have everything when I get back to the truck this evening. I can return the LP if I do not need it.
Thanks,
Chris

No gellin, except in my shoes. 50-60* here.
Ye old fuel pump had no more spring in the rod. 0PSI, unless pumping the primer, then 10+.
New fuel pump and I have 12-13 psi at idle and 20 or so revved up (couldn't see the tach from under the hood). The pre-screener/heater had a nasty looking screen in it. I bought the "rebuild kit" per PN on Dodgeram.info and put new screen and gasket in it, after clean out.
Clamped the return line and pressure shot up to 40+ psi, so I need to examine the overflow valve.
Can I pull it apart and stretch the spring, or do I need a new one? Should I be abel to get this from Cummins, if a new one is needed?
Thanks,
Chris

Stretching the OF valve spring is a temporary fix as the real problem is the spring has lost it's temper. Better to buy a new one but Cummins charges way too much.
I get them here for around $40

I got mine from sam_the_diesel_man (Ebay user ID).
My screen just appeared to be full of crud, dark brown. Could be from the biodiesel or could be because the BD cleaned out my tank and lines, as it is an excellent solvent.
Since I bought the "rebuild kit", after reading about it on the DodgeRam.org site, I just picked the old creen out and put the new one it, after wiping out the bowl. I meant to take a closer look at the screen, but have not had a chance.

Received the new OFV Saturday. It is legit, with Bosch PN. Checked pressures before and after.
Before:
Idle: 11
2500 RPM: 25
After:
Idle: 21
2500 RPM: 30.5-31
Thanks to all for the aid on this.

Took the old LP apart today. The internal spring was broken in 2 places. Can you get just the springs for the LP's? I'll put one in and keep it as a spare.
Thanks,
Chris
