piston / ring information
piston / ring information
as stated earlier, there are marine pistons that are not cummins marine. Cummins marines Im told are made ny mahle though.
Anyway, the pistons I received are mahle/clevite marine style pistons. The bowl is 53 cc . They will lowe rthe compression slighly.
They are a cast piston. They do have the iron insert at the first ring land that the cummins piston has. I was told that is what makes the cummins piston different then most, but since they are both made by mahle, I guess you get the iron ring land support.
The new 020 over piston is about 7 oz lighter total. Thats the pistons, pin, c clips, and thr entire ring package. The rings are actually heavier.
I m having the crowns coated and the skirts, since a family member runs a coating shop. Im also doing the head/valves and runners.
I oped for total seal rings, which is ONLY the second ring, its not a total seal ring package from totalseal. It does appear to be a totalseal ring that they replace in the mahle packaging. Other then small miscommunications with terminology and name brands, I m totally satisfied with the parts themselves. The new pistons do have the first ring moved down when compared to the oem cummins piston too.

This is a new Cummins Marine piston (you can see the boxes andother pistons in the background) in '05. The 2 compression rings have steel land. Oil scrape is in the cast aluminum. The skirt is not an overlay coating. The skirt was actually recessed for the pad (some call them buttons)

This is a stock piston compared to a Cummins Marine. I could be mistaken as this was nearly 4 years back.

I would hope a larger bowl piston weighs less than a stock piston

The ones I received are very very very similar, but made by the mahle/clevite division. The bowl is slighty smaller, and the coating is not there. I wanted to coat the crowns anyways. The ring pack on the ones I got I think are similar also. The top rings looks to be in about the same place, and the second rings is closer to the oil ring I think.
The piston I received also has a shirt at the base around the sides, where the cummins marine doesnt.
I actually have seen your pictures before, and sorta lead to all this. Besides you, I couldnt find very much piston info. I was told that mahle is making the pistons for cummins, now, I dont know about 2005 though.
All is looking good so far. Just costly....Ill be into my rebuild to 4000 I think, with the radiator and fans.
Thats, pistons, coated skirts and crowns, rod bolts, all gaskets, bore block, surface block, hot tank block, helix 2 cam, bearings, ported head myself, oring head (.040 groove, 041 stainless wire, to center on oem gasket at the firering. ) Valve job, coated valves, cumbustion chambers, and runners.
oh and head studs.

I use my gallery of photos now & then Very recently used the same images in a different thread (was that your old thread?).
I'll look through my photos and see if I have anymore to share. Old computer crashed about that time and I lost a couple hundred files.
Feel free to browse through the gallery http://gra.midco.net/johne/images/

It ran great before, and I am hoping for more power, and more power sooner also. As you can see , its a 6 spd so I dont race it, other then the occasional 20-30 mph to whatever with vettes and similar cars. I ussually tow a 50 ft trailer and often come in around 30k lbs, so other then just being able to tow easier.....the only point of this rebuild is to expand here and there on what it already had. It already pulled great, but with 230k miles, I realize after getting it apart that it was more then ready. Before it made right at 600/1150, with meth, and hope its up from there and lower / more tolerant egt's to a higher load.
Plus, the engine was so dirty, I hated it, so atleast now Il be able to touch it without staining my skin for 5 days.

Sounds good, thanks for your reply.
Like you, I first had the engine rebuilt in my 1996 Dodge CTD at around 220,000 miles. Mine was ready too.
