performance/mileage question

My neighbor has a 94 2500 2wd, flatbed, 4.10s I think, 5 speed, with a GV od unit also. when he bought the truck new he was getting 20mpg as expected. He has had the following done,. Unfortunatly the owner dosent know the particulars here. 4" exhaust, AFE intake, upgraded Turbo, bigger injectors ,a fuel plate. he did mention it was a full Banks kit?? he runs 900 post turbo, 29 max psi boost, smokes more than he should, and gets 9 to 11 mpg when he is loaded at 16500 lbs, and I recall 13-14 or so empty He was told he should be putting out 450 Hp from the bombing but I doubt it. Do these mileage numbers look right? What should the injector timing be at for max performance, its never been checked with 200K on the truck. His current mechanic is constantly tinkering with it trying to improve it. I dont think he has the knowledge at this point. any input would be great.
Thanks.
The chief. He,he.

I have a full banks kit myself for a 1996

Horses i dont think they are close to 450 rwhp.. maybe 375 at the fly if you are lucky. Being that he has a manual tranny, His stock clutch would slip ALOT if he had 450 rwhp, believe me. Mileage sounds outta wack, seems his truck needs to be timed, i get 16-18 city on mine empty, but then again i got 355 gearing, so with the 410 at about a 300 rpm decrease and hittin overdrive sooner, i wouldnt think that the mileage would be much different. My boost gauge pegs the 30 like its nothing, and with my pyro post turbo i run closer to 1100 after the add 300 rule due to it bein on the downpipe...

If you wanna improve it, just move the plate back, as i did im not at stock position due to stock clutch, loosen the afc housing for quicker spool up, to help u on the bottom end, i also take off on low first as well, its irritatiing but it helps my mileage.. But then again low first and 410s are murder on the kidneys, i had a ZF5 with 410s before.. and it was harsh on the back. My timing if im not mistaken is stock i have no records of it being moved, neither does the PO, so im gonna set it at 16.5 degrees, maybe 17 sooner or later. Bigger injectors? i dont think they came with the banks kit, i could be wrong tho, He might have 370s and a plate full forward. Upgraded turbo, hmmm mine i dont think has that either. I dont know if it came with it, it looks to be the stock 35 on it, unless its a compressor wheel.. If he has 370 injectors, and somethin along the lines of a B1 or HX40 then he should be closer to 400 rwhp, bein that a 100 plate by itself will hit 350 rwhp with a stock turbo... if he has a 10 plate, or the banks kit which is closer to a 6 or 8 with one of those turbos then its not out of the question for his numbers. I myself have to dyno mine to get some "baselines" for my bombs, i have them coming along nicely.. But i hope my experience helps you As far as im concerned this is what the banks kit for our truck years came with..

Banks plate
Pod for two gauges
pyro
boost gauge 0-30

I dont know but if the kit was 3000 dollars in 1996 for that.. then boy were someone elses eyes poked.. I do know tho my truck runs STRONG THO! and pulls like there is no tomorrow.. even with wimpy rear end gears... hope this helps tho..

So if I just put the 100 plate in my mostly stock 96 I can reach 350hp with no other mods? Understood my tranny will probably not handle it but that is not the question. I have not heard that stated before.

I think he started with the banks kit then added in search of more ponies, Im gonna have to have a looksie and get some info off the parts if possible. I know he has upgraeded his clutch also due to the HP increase. Says a fullsize semi is next for towin the trailer. I was shocked to hear his trailer wt, its a GN toybox, maybe 20ft+? says its just got to much junk in it.
Im gonna send him down to my Injector man for some fine tuning. see what come out of it.
Thanks for the info.

My little pumped truck ran 300 and 320 hp with a 10 forward, timed @ 16.5, straight piped and a k&n.

Clutch didn't like that at all.

Does any one have a picture of a 100 plate that shows the profile?

How long has the flatbed been on the truck? I lost mileage putting it on. Enough to offset the mileage gain I got with the BOMBs.

Is that 16.5k the trailer weight, or GCVR? If GCVR, the mileage doesn't sound completely out of line, for 4.10 gears.

I have 4.10s, and get 13 winter/15 summer, empty, with the flatbed. Was getting 16+ with the dually box.

Stil need to advance the timing. Gonna set it at 16*.

No with your little pump you will need some 370's either a hybrid turbo or a HX40( or comparable), your timing advanced to 16*-18* a 0,10 or 100 plate a 3K-4K GSK kit, and then you should be around 350rwhp and 750-900rwtq! But if you have this much rwhp you will need a tranny that will cost ya at least 3k unless you can do it your self. BTW the guys above have manual trannys so they have a larger injection pump then you have.

Not the '95s. They have a 175 pump. '96 auto has the 180.

I bet if you haven't check it the timing has slipped. Having mine advanced sure did make a difference.

That would be my guess also. Even if it hadn't slipped, it still needs to be advanced because of the extra fuel.

It would help get rid of some of the white smoke, too.
