Over 3000 RPM in First????

I had always thought that my truck in sig was stock. I bought it used with no indications of the pump ever being touched.

Tonight at work, I was kinda trying to keep the truck warm. (2 degrees and ???on the gel) I was tooling around in 1st. Went ahead and floored it. Tach went to about 3k or just a bit higher and stayed there till I slowed down.

In Drive, highest I've ever seen is about 2500 or so as I can't afford the tickests.

Does this sound like stock for a 12V 98? Thought it would defuel and sputter before holding at 3K.

That sounds about right for the pump in that truck. My dad's 97 will hit 3000 RPM in 5th gear on the highway, and it is bone stock, the bigger pumps put out more fuel. In 2nd and 3rd gear it will rev past 3000 RPM , i got scared and let off around 3300 and it was still pulling, althought not very hard.

The mechanical governor will allow a higher no-load speed (high idle) than the engine will pull to when under load. First gear is practically the same thing as sitting in neutral with your foot on the floor. It's a mechanical setup with springs and weights, not a lightswitch. Also, unless the timing is set too retarded the engine should not sputter even when defueled at high RPM. Your truck is stock.

Thanks, Starting to think about adding some goodies. Didn't want to spend $$ on unnecessary stuff.
