Thumbs down Oil Leak still between Head and Exh. Manifold

Well, replaced the valve stem seals in #1 cylinder because it was leaking oil between where the exhaust manifold and head come together and burning about a quart every couple weeks or so.This didn't solve the problem, it still blows whitish-blue smoke coming off idle kinda bad and the leak is still there after the seals were replaced. What else could this be from?

I remember you telling me you had quite a few miles on that engine. do you have a lot of blow-by? oil usage is obviously there , I would pull the head and check the gasket and pull #1 cylinder and check the rings and bore.

..

John:
Yeah just turned 377k the other day..the blowby is very minimal, i've had a 2002 truck with only 50k on it with 3 times as much blowby.I would do all that you mentioned, but it's a cost issue at this point..this could have been leaking for 100k miles already and the old owner didn't see it because the valve covers were leaking so bad before..so who knows.

This one is really ODD!

It seems to be leaking oil from the top bolt on the exhaust manifold on #1 cylinder from inside the head. The bolt is tight, and no other evidence of leakage is apparent, not even on the bottom bolt.

Pull the rubber intake hose off the turbo and check if turbo seals are leaking oil into engine. It will be very obvious with the amount of oil lost.

Why or How would it blow the opposite direction and why back up into #1 cylinder?Just a question..not to be a Edit...lol..Merry Christmas!

When the seals blow it can be on the compressor side in which case it goes into intercooler and intake manifold then engine combustion, but it is not a mist like when it goes through a 5000 psi injector. Hence combustion is poor and you can see oil residue like you see at exhaust manifold. Compressor blades, intercooler and tubing are all oily mess when this happens. Easiest way to check is loosen stainless clamp at compressor (turbocharger) outlet and see if oily.

More common is exhaust side turbine side leak where high temperature stresses seal more and oil goes straight out exhaust without going thru engine.

but why would it only show up in one hole?

My next step would be check compression and then look for possible head gasket leak causing oil seapage into cylinder.

You would think there would be lots of blowby from your crankcase breather tube from No 1 cylinder if this is the case.

you'd think if it were a bad ring/scored cylinder, you'd be seeing a puff out the downdraft tube... you already swapped injectors around, right?

could it somehow be pump related?
