When I did mine, I laid the timing cover front side down on the seal install tool and used a screwdriver to carefully drive the seal in from the back side.
Hey Greg- That's how the TST write-up reads. Did you have problems with the screw driver wanting to damage the seal? I thought of pressing the seal in from the front using this tool (hydraulic press). Last question - Does the thin dust seal go in with the flared (larger diameter) part towards the engine or harmonic dampener?
Yup, I just followed TST's instructions. The outer portion of the crank seal is constructed from a band of steel. You just follow the TST instructions and use a screwdriver or punch on that steel part to tap/drive the seal in. I also spoke with a mechanic at a local diesel shop and that is how he said to install the seal as well.
I installed the dust shield with the larger flared part towards the engine, touching that metal band of the crank seal, as shown in the TST instructions.
I haven't lost a drop of oil from the front of the engine since.
