OEM turbine housing on a '94?

pardon the intrusion by a 1st Gen owner...

I'm looking at swapping the housing on my '89, and have been told that the wastegated turbine housing from the '94 WH1C or the '95-'98 HX35 is the ticket...

can somebody just answer the newbie question below:

is the factory turbine housing on a '94 definitely a 12cm wastegated housing?

or are there any other options?

are there markings on it to verify it's a 12cm?

Thanks.
Greg

Unless it has been modified from stock , then it is a 12cm housing , no questions asked. a 94 and some 95's actually still have the H1C , but with a wastegated housing , making it a WH1C.

No problem, if you watch the classifieds , there is usually a used HX 35 in there , pretty cheap , and it is basically identicle to a WH1C, and will bolt right on.

are there markings to confirm the size? I have somebody that is getting ready to buy a new housing, but he bought the truck used and I isn't sure if the turbine housing is the stock one...

it "looks" all the same age to me, but I don't want to end up with the wrong size...

an additional question to add into the mix...

do they make 16cm wastegated housings? or just 12cm/14cm? I inquired about a 16cm in the Classifieds, and the seller seemed to think they didn't make a 16cm wastegated housing...

I know HTT doesn't list one on their site, but they also don't list a 12cm wastegated, but when I called to ask, they sure 'nuff had 'em for sale...

Thanks.

16 cm's are not wastegated for the typical HX series turbos. I put a 12cm housing from a '97 on my H1C turbo on the 93 I had. The exhaust fit up was a little bit of a stretch, rather a crunch to get the elbow on the housing as you have to push the exhaust pipe back about 1" to allow for the wastegate area on the new housing. Mine was just shy of the firewall and worked well.

The only problem, if you can call it that, was a flutter in the turbo as it did not like the new boost range at low RPM's. You can search flutter in the 1st gen area and see what kind of hits you get. It is a nice upgrade and makes the truck alot more responsive, especially if you have tweaked the pump at all. I was hitting about 28 psi with that housing and pump only mods.

If it has the wastegate on it, it is for sure either a 12 opr 14cm housing. If you lucked up, and get a 14cm housing, then good for you, but i doubt that will happen, and the only other thing it can be if it has a wastegate is a 12cm, so as long as it has the wastegate, it should be one or the other(12cm unless you are REALLY lucky), and they will swap out. . I put one on a buddies 1st, gen and he really like it.

actually, I'm hoping for the 12cm...

are there markings on it so I can tell which one it is?

Thanks.

The only markings I have seen on my housing is that there is a decent sized 12 in the mouth of the housing where the exhaust comes in... I never saw it on mine until I started working on it with the dremel, and got the soot cleaned off of it. So, when you get the housing off, just get a small wire bush(it would be nice if you could get one on a dremel), and clean out both sides of the housing(there is a divider), and if I remember right, there is one on the top on oneside, and one on thebottom on theother side of the divider. Good luck! BTW;ifyougeta14cm,let me know...Ill trade you my 12cm for it. Those things are like $300 new.
