NV4500 probs:(

in my 96 1 ton my fith gear is extreamly noisy and very annoying. could this be a symptom? it is only audible under power and quite under decel. i think it kinda sounds like gear clash. the fith gear is supposed to have the updated nut on it. i checked the oil and the level is good and its clean. i have not drained it to look for metal in the oil. the more i drive it the louder it gets but i cant not drive it being that its my only mode of transportation. it does have a dual disc clutch if that means anything to ya. any thought would be extreamly helpfull. thank you

Most likely the shaft splines are worn where the 5th gear rides allowing it to wobble. It will keep getting worse.
Just proves one more time the updated nut fix doesn't work.

Only way I know of to permanently fix the 5th gear nut problem is here http://quad4x4.com/NV4500%205th%20Ge...0Solutions.htm

thank you very much infidel. it sounds very logical. that trans only has 50-60K sinse the rebuild. while i got ur att r there any heavy duty syncros avalible? i also dont have a 2nd gear syncro. in my mind is that having that dual disc clutch u got twice the rotating mass to slow down for witch wore the syncro out. am i thinking right?

this will fix it for good .my neighbor has lost 3 5th gears because he has 4:10 and tows a lot of weight he has had this new torque king in it for 2 years now and said no noise.

I don't know if there is a heavier duty syncro available but I'm sure the quad4x4 guys do.
Most common cause of syncro failure is people trying to go cheap and using other than the recommended tranny fluid.
The syncros are very sensitive to fluid chemistry, most fluids eat them like acid.
Only fluids I know of that for sure work are the recommended Castrol Syntorq or Amsoil MTG

I would disagree that with a DD you have twice the mass. I've never handled a Ram DD clutch, but the DD clutches I have handled (for high performance gas cars) are significantly smaller in diameter than than their larger single disk counterparts. Since the rotating mass is closer to the center, then there's less force exerted.

However, I think the difference in force between a single and DD clutch are negligible, and clutch weight/mass alone will have no effect what-so-ever in shift quality.

The dual discs are of the 13" variety. Most trucks only came with a 12.25" clutch factory, until the HO 24v's. My synchros in my original tranny disappeared rather quickly after I installed the dual disc. I also put in some Redline oil which I think was a major contributor to that.

How exactly does the DD clutch affect the synchros in the transmission? Does it take longer to disengage?

Yep, it generally makes shifting slower. My theory is that the discs drag on the floater disc and keep turning with the flywheel. There was a really long thread on comp-d about this.
