wiring probs

Has anyone ever gone from a ford truck to a dodge truck, and while pulling the same trailer blown the blinker mech in the dodge but not the ford. My truck and my buddy's dodge will blow it but on my old ford it would never blow this blinker. I had my ford when he had his dodge and it wouldn't do anything to it. I told him it may be a weak relay. But when I bought my dodge it did the same thing. It is a 7 pin connector. I just spent another 32 bucks for another one. Is the wiring different in the dodges?

Re:wiring probs

The basic plug output diagram is the same and if you have the factory plug at the back has the terminal display on it for each pin. Is your Dodge different, yes it is in that Dodges dont like any more current drawn than necessary ie; turn signal circuits are set up for 1 Left on the truck and 1 Left on the trailer circuit. Add any extra bulbs to that and the circuit is by definition over loaded. The wiring is very light in the Dodge and the computor monitors increased resistance to prevent failure, now you may say there is only 2 bulbs on the left turn circuit and it still blows the flasher. Do not forget that older trailers may have resistance buit up in the termination ends from corrosion or wires where the insulation has been comprimised. Also even though your truck is new the factory trailer plug ins are noted for easy contamination from road grunge, but if 2 different trucks are having problems most likely the trailer is to blame. I just put a flat deck on my 2001 and took two handfulls of unnecessary wiring out of the back end of my truck. Dodge has a direct ground to every circuit which is good except that it takes the tour of the world to get there. In your case go to a trailer dealer and hook to a new trailer and see if the problem is still there, if it is not there is defintely a problem with the trailer you are trying to pull.PK

Re:wiring probs

might need to get a heavy duty flasher relay. also check the wires in the trailer plug they might be rubbing in there also
