nv4500 leaks

Ok I have a 94 3/4 ton 4x4 the trany is leaking between the transfer case and the trany is this an easy fix by taking the transfer case off the trany and replacing the seal in the trany or is it deeper than that it is gear oil I think that is leaking, if it.s not gear oil does the case on the trasfer have to be opend to rplace that seal

Not too bad

Fairly easy; just get a good 12 pt socket to take the bolts out.....they strip easy then it's a pita. There isn't a seal/gasket, just silicone. While you have it off you can check the 5th gear nut if it hasn't been fixed yet. You can tack-weld the one as it is (provided it isn't loose), or buy the updated nut and you will need the two special socket/wrenches to get it off. Less than 3 hours if you are semi-handy with tools. cd

Once apart

When you slide/drop the transfer case off the back of the tranny (8 12-point bolts, 10mm I think) the 5th gear nut is the first/only nut on the tranny mainshaft that goes into the transfer case. The only thing sealing the transfer case to the tranny is a bead of silicone and some very flat surfaces. Make sure you support the tranny/engine before you drop the cross member, a good tranny jack is worth it's weight in gold and you can do the job yourself with one. cd

which side of the adapter is it leaking from? there is a seal that seals the input of the tcase against the adapter to keep the gear oil from mixing with the atf in the tcase. what drained from the tcase? make sure you fill the tranny with the right fluid.

in that case, you need to replace the tranny output seal. pull the tcase and you'll be looking right at it. then reinstall the tcase with a thin layer of rtv.
