NV4500 in a gasser?
NV4500 in a gasser?
Does anyone know if they used the NV4500 in the gassers? particularly 98 360 3/4tons? My dad has a 98 2500 360 5spd, the clutch is going, he's looking to get rid of it. Got my mind spinnin awhile ago in here about maybe buying it from him and swapping in my CTD. 160k stripper, but it's 4x4 and it's clean, no rust, frames spotless. I could get it cheap of course. I just want to know how much I'd have to strip out and replace. If it's a NV4500 I could do it rather easily I think. And cheaply. Maybe put the 360 in my 1st gen and get some of my money back.
Is there any way you can distinctly tell if it is a nv4500? If I can I'll get some pictures of it, its too dark right at the moment. I can always crawl under there and look at it. What other 5spds came with the gas trucks? What was it the NV3550? I tried talking to a dealer, they were completely and totally unwilling to help and acted annoyed that I'd even try to ask for information without buying something.

I believe the 2500 gasser NV4500 has a different input shaft but I think it can be swapped out for the V10/CTD input shaft.......a quick way that you may be able to identify the NV4500 is the fill plug will be tagged with the phrase "use only Castrol Syntorc" or something like that - no other 5spd I know will have that tag

The NV4500 in a gas pig (or 6.5GM) has a smaller input shaft...I've had to replace them for customers before. I would also guess this version NV4500 is not the same NV4500-HD that comes in a Dodge/Cummins, I know both versions exist. But you would have to call a tranny rebuilder like Blumenthalls to confim that.
...i have also read in numerous places that the little gasser nv4500 trans is lighter duty. and, if memory serves, a nv3500 trans and bellhousing is all one piece - like an automatic. as where a nv4500 has 4 large bolts that connect the iron trans to the aluminum bellhousing.
