NV 4500 main shaft removal from case
I have been fighting since yesterday to get the mainshaft assembly out in my 98 12 valve, removed 4th gear syncros and reverse gear, manual says lay on left side rotate mainshaft counter clockwise slightly lift it to clear gear then lift out
Looked at various videos on internet etc but no luck removing it.
Was hauling heavy with this truck for the year I have had it. It has a Hiab 035 5500 lb knuckle boom on it. When going up a hill in 5th lost tranny input shaft is hammered 4th on countershaft some damage need to replace plus needle bearings

Pic of input shaft. Trans making a bunch of noise knew it was going out didn’t want to pay $300 tow bill getting it home 90 miles away so drove it barely made it. Lol

BTW for those concerned about all the $400 in special tools $100 mainshaft tool etc pullers its not needed got this far, you discard the special nut anyway for mainshaft just heated it and cut away parts with torch came right off no mainshaft damage, tried unsuccessfully to hit the nut edge with a punch and hammer no luck usually loctite on this one did have 3 set screws in it I removed. 5th gear pulls off easily with any puller, bought the special Miller tool adapter for there $300 puller couldnt even get in on the gear due to backing plate behind 5th gear.
Ready to take the Oxy torch to this case though LOL

Move all synchros to idle position- it looks like the synchro closest to the input is engaged, and the different directions of the gear cut will pull it forward with the synchro engaged even if you want it to go backwards...
But maybe it's just an optical illusion on your pic..
