It's some kind of road tax. It's a real pain in the rear. Every vehicle has to go through an inspection. Broekn glass, exhaust gases, etc. They even take rust into consideration in the inspection if I rememebr correctly.

Yes MOT is a Department of Transport test that lasts for 12 months and costs $100 for a car or truck under 3.5 ton. Checks on brakes on rolling road, general vehicle condition including rust etc and emissions (I got my tester squared up and he grinned and said maybe better not to smoke test my new truck, when I told him about fuel plates etc) Road tax on the truck is a yearly charge of bout $400

What's the score in the US? Do you have similar system?
I guess it's cheaper, generally is.

No - here it varies by state. In Illinois it's around $80/Year for plate renewal, and about double that for new title and new plates when a veichle is purchased. And if a veichle is purchased from a private owner, the tax rate is substantially less than a dealer.

Now in North Carolina, when I have relatives, there is an annual inspection, which does not cost, but it's extensive and anything such as broken glass will have to be recitified. There can be fines involved if repeated problems are not recitifed. I think other states have axle taxes, which generally hit newer, pricer viechles harder, but I don't know details.
