Not enough boost?
Not enough boost?
I've been doing some searching around and I've come to the conclusion that I don't think my truck is making enough boost. I'm running a full Banks Power Pack on a 97' 4x4 and I can only achieve a max of 20 PSI. The truck pulls fairly hard off the bottom, but craps out on top around 2500. With my foot planted to the floor I can only achieve around 13 PSI until what feels like the torque converter locks up, then I get up to around 20psi. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any problems I should look for? Going by the 10 hp/1lb of boost, I don't think I'm making the kind of power it could be. I'm kind of new to this, and I think the truck should be making a little more power than it is. Any suggestions or education would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I've installed Banks PowerPacs on '97s before, they'll get 35 psi boost.
The Banks wastegates come preadjusted.
I'm thinking someone set the plate too far back instead of in the stock position when they changed it over.
The crapping out at 2500 rpm is about normal, it's the governor kicking in.
You need a 3k governor spring kit to jack it up. You'll love it.

Hey fellas, thanks alot for the advice!! I'm gonna try to get in there and check out the plate position some time this weekend. I'm also going to check out the 3K spring you're talking about as well. I know the truck will pull past 2500. Thanks again

I have a Banks pack on mine, plate was in stock position pushing 25psi, i slid the plate all the way forward. More power, but still at 25psi max. So, adjusted wastegate now i get 30-32psi. You may have to adjust the wastegate.
With the stock governor springs you won't be able to pull over 2500-2700 max. change to the 3K or do the valve springs and the 4K, I like the 4K best and you don't have to wind it that high but it sure pulls nice for towing.

You might check for boost leaks. What kind of pyro temps do you run? If your down on temps and boost then it is a fuel problem. Also check yor afc line, it is synflex and i have seen them crack. Hope you find the problem.Good luck!

I just have a plate/boost elbow on my truck, and in 2nd gear with the TC locked up I can hit 32lbs, and i think that is pretty good. I can only hit about 20lbs without the TC locked up, but you should do better than 13psi. Something may not be adjusted right.

Update...
All right, this weekend I got in there and slid the plate all the way forward. I also moved the AFC full forward and played with the star wheel a little bit. With my foot to the floor I can only achieve 25 lbs. max. I seem to get more boost in higher gears just easing into the throttle. EGT's NEVER get above 1000. Sounds to me like theres something wrong here. I did check all of the boots on the intercooler piping and didn't find any leaks that I could tell. I think I might get under there and check again. How does one go about adjusting the waste gate? Are there any write ups anywhere? I appreciate the help so far. Hopefully I'll get this thing figured out. BTW, I bought the truck with the Banks kit already installed so it seems like I'm going to have to go back and correct some installation errors. Thanks again!

Seems like the same thing that happened to me. If i remember correctly, to adjust the wastegate, go under the truck, under the WG, there is a nut on a threaded shaft. Turn it like your screwing it into the round part of the WG. I think that is the right direction. It took about 10 or so turns to see a difference(test drive). That nut shouldnt turn on the shaft(maybe a little) even though its threaded.
