Noise from Transmission

Hello again,

This forum was invaluable about 1 year ago to solve a fuel issue with my 97 12valve. It has run great ever since.

Just a n ote to anyone who reads this. Check the sending unit for a rotten elbow if you have hard start or rough running.

I have another issue now. Just today I am driving away from a stop and I hear grinding clashing noises from the transmission. Just the type of sound you hear when you " grind the gears" no interupption in power or anything.

Did it in first three gears but I got it into fourth and limped home. It seems to shift fine, all gears work. It doesn't make the sound immediately after I realease the clutch but it does shortly thereafter. Seems to be a little worse with more power. But feathering the gas doens't neecessarily mean it won't happen.

Any ideas out there guys?

Thanks a tonne for any and all suggestions.

You have 5th? 5th gear nut could be coming loose or already is.

I have had that happen already. @ 230 000 km. I am now @ 287.

Would that particular problem manifest itself in with these symptoms?

Last time.........I just lost 5th gear on the highway. 3..........4.........then nothing.

Maybe the pilot bearing is going out.

If the pilot bearing was out of it wouldn't the noise happen all the time?

THis is sort of all of a sudden a grnding/clashing noise. If I put the clutch in it goes away and may or may not start again when I let it out again.

The sound is very similar to grinding the gears....

Thanks for the suggestions

I am still having this problem. JI have left it sitting since my last post.

Threw it in second gear and it happened. Seems more like a clashing sound....I can feel it in the shift lever too. It has a fairly high frequency for the speed I was going ( like 10)

Anyone out there had this happen?

Hate to say it, but sounds like an internal bearing or worse.

I would try draining the fluid into a pan and look for metallic particles.

Sad.

i thought the same about mine until the front drive shaft exploded on the freeway, took it off and ran smooth as can be! bad CV joint, the socket broke and it made a horrible noise and vibrating. before totally rebuilding the tranny look at the front drive shaft
