No Power

My brother needs some of your guys help. 1994 dodge cummins auto with 225,000 miles and we are lacking alot of power somewhere we have boost and the pump is in time.
One guy we took it to said torque converter or injection pump but I really don't to tear into that yet unless I have to any other ideas? these cummins are all new to me so a real good explation would be good
Thanks
Rob

Re:No Power

Make sure that the fuel shutdown solenoid is pulling all the way in. I just had that problem.

Re:No Power

Replace the air filter, fuel filter and check for an exhaust restriction.

Re:No Power

Outside of a plugged primary fuel filter, the most common low power problems can be traced to air infiltration in the fuel system. Many people forget about the flexible fuel line from the hard line to the lift pump, and from the tank to the frame. Those lines should be changed every couple of years to prevent air leaks. Another common problem is the use of screw down (airplane type) clamps in place of the OEM style flat compression bands. The screw down clamps get loose after a time and allow air bubbbles to seep in the system.

Other things to check are the heater wire coupler on the prefilter/heater. A dab of dielectric grease over the coupler and then replug the wires will generally correct that leak. The water seperator being loose from the primary filter is a good candidate, as are loose filters or leaking gaskets. The other item is a plugged screen in the prefilter (mounted down by the lift pump, and includes the heater). The bottom unscrews from the prefilter and that screen should be replaced every few years.

If the preventative maintenance items do not find the problem, do a flow and pressure test from your lift pump. They actually have been known to fail on a 12 valve after a couple hundred thousand miles.

If you have had the problem creeping up on you, and occasional trouble starting, check your overflow valve to be sure the spring is not broken. If the truck still has the original one piece overflow valve, count yourself lucky it ran this long.
