No 4th gear??

Well i looked at a truck today, couldn't drive it, it was burried in snow behind 3 trucks. It has 231000 miles on it. The truck is a 97 2wd, 1 ton reg cab, auto with a welding flatbed set up. The cab is in good condition and the interior is a little dirty but would clean right up. He wants 2500 for it. He said the trans doesnt' shift into 4th, i couldn't verify this though. Any idea what would be wrong with it?? I thought the trans was totally, thats why i was lookin into a 45/5600. I was thinkin about buyin it and fixing it then selling it???

If its in decent shape at all its worth 2500, but dont know what could be wrong with the overdrive. My Engine Speed Sensor went out, and i lost 4th gear, and converter lockup, but it also made my alternator not charge, and the A/C didnt work, and the speedo/tach didnt work, but I would think its something electrical or maybe some kind of shift valve? I dont know, but just a guess?

It is most likely one of two sensors causing the lack of OD........it is either no signal or a very high voltage reading from the TPS...........or the trans temp sensor is reading the wrong resistance or there is a poor connection at the connector........I had the connector foul up on my 94........I pulled the pins out of the connector, cleaned and crimped them slightly to ensure tight contact with the sensor terminals and it worked fine after that.
