I know the 5th gear problem has been discussed to death, but...

The day before we were going to leave Yellowstone to head back home to Michigan I lost 5th gear. With 174,000 miles on it I had hoped that maybe I was going to get away without having the problem since I don't tow real heavy and haven't done any performance mods. Well, that wasn't to be. We drove 1600 miles in 4th gear to get back home (with the 4.10 rear end that's about 55mph).

So I guess I'll order a rebuilt trans from Standard Transmission. Maybe I could get the nut fixed but I would be worried that something else, like a syncro, would go out next. Guess I'll just bite the bullet.

The thing is - I just had the transmission out to replace the clutch before we left on our trip. Aaarg!

sorry bout your luck, hate you had to join the club....i lost 5th gear in the 99' i had, i had to drive a couple hundred miles to get home, so i kno how ya feel, (i had 3.55 though)....if your tranny hasnt had a lot of pulling done with it, you may be ok just fixin the 5th gear, the have an updated nut which isnt as prone to failure, but if u wanna rebuild it, go for it....have fun, and good luck... I really like the truck and have no plans to replace it any time soon so I went with a rebuilt trans from Standard Transmission. If I get another 175,000 miles out of this tranny I'll be happy.

After doing the clutch replacement myself I was not real anxious to tackle that job again. I found a local shop that did the transmission R&R for me for $176. Wish I would have checked with them before doing the clutch job.

Well, I haven't taken it apart to verify for sure, but they advertise that they use a fully splined shaft for their rebuilt transmissions and they seem to have a pretty good reputation.

But, the real question is: what do you do with a 2000hp electro-motive diesel????
