New member going from GMC HD to dodge

I currently have a 02 GMC HD 2500. I want a 12 valve, 5-speed dodge. I know there are some problems with the 5-speed trans but which one are the best, what years and what probs do they have. I pull a heavy trailer with my gmc alot and I stiil want to be able to pull it from indianapolis to texas but I want to mod it. I have searched but no found the info I want. Any advise would help thanks.

Good site right here for the info you need, Eric. Use the search function and you can find enough information to keep you reading for hours! I'm a new owner of a 95 12v 5spd (no problems with tranny AT ALL) and love the truck!

the best year would be the 98- 12 5 speed, this is cause you can open the back door and it comes with the bigger fuel pump, 215hp instead of the 160hp

the 96 to 98 5 speed 12valves have the big 215 pump, but any 94 to 98 can be modded pretty easy to get 1k torque. the nv4500 is a weak link in these trucks. i have said to he!! with it and purchased a 6 speed to put the 4500 out of it's misery for my truck.

As said before, all 12 valves are easilly modified. Do the real shopping on getting a truck that you will like after the mods are done, as I think that is harder than getting the big horsepower.

welcome aboard!!

slowsupra,

I agree with the others 96-98. I believe the 98 is the first year that you could get the short bed with the extended cab, plus the back doors. Good luck in your search.

The only real problem with the 5 speed is that 5th gear nut can back off, but there is more than one place that sells a fix for that. From what I have read on this forum, the nut normally backs off due to lugging in 5th below 1600 rpm. Anyway, I have read that the nv4500 (5 speed tranny) can realiably handle up to 1500 ft lbs of torque....

The trans can be corrected by installing a fully splined shaft. I think the part is around $200. as mentioned 94 to 98.5 are most desirable. the p7100 injector pumps are tops, no electronic BS like later models.

I see two different posts about what years have the big pump, how can you tell when you look at the truck?

94-95=160 pump
96-98=215 pump

There are different ratings for transmission differences--ie a 94 with an auto would be 160, but a 94 with a manual would be rated at 175. Same pump just tuned differently, I believe. If my facts are wrong or skewed, I'm sure someone will chime in shortly. Hope this helps.
