New Jersey Exhaust Inspection
New Jersey Exhaust Inspection
I have not gotten around to getting my truck inspected yet, and am wondering if the exhaust will pass anyway. It has what appears to be a 3" exhaust going from the turbo all the way to the back with just a small section that is a little fatter than the rest. The fat section "muffler/resonator" is about 18" long and is only about an inch bigger than the regular pipe. The engine sound in the cab is a little louder than I would call ideal, and there is no catalytic converter visible at all. Will the state fail me for this kind of exhaust in NJ? Will they make me replace it right away, for noise or emissions reasons? The truck is a 1997.

I wouldn't worry about it. They'll run you thru the heavy vehicle line. They don't check emissions, but do check lights, front end , braking etc...
I maintain a fleet of 8 Dodges, 1994 up to 2004, and have 2 of my own. I usually go to the Randolph inspection and have only failed for uneven braking or chipped windshields. Where in Jersey do you live? Todd

I am a NJ native as well, here are my words of advice:
register you rtruck for 10K lbs. or more.
diesel engine + 10k lb. reg = self inspect = NO EMISSIONS!!!
Now that deserves a

Another New Jersey person checking in, here's a question on registration. I'm registered for 8,800 lbs.(RAM 2500) I ride the GSP (Parkway) alot above and below 105 mm, North of Eatontown the GSP does not allow trucks over 7,700 lbs. Of course there are alot of us ridding over limit north of 105, the Troopers don't seem to care, it just looks like a pickup. My question is...I'm looking to get EZpass and when I check out their site they have two options- private cars, trucks and SUV under 7,700 or commerical over 10,000. Either I lie and get the lower one, or get the higher one and will that one trip some type of issue on the GSP on toll plazas north of 105 and exits? Does EZpass double check your NJ registration? What are you guys doing?
Thanks, Doug H

Seems to me like you are not going to lie. how can they have weights like that? what about a 8 or 9k lb. truck? Big point to make here I think is NON commercial as well. Just because I am registered for 10k in order to haul some weight does not make me commercial. I would suggest contacting them, ask what a person is supposed to do if they are registered for 10k and use their truck as a personal vehicle.
