Need a new transfer case!!!

Hey all,
I came out of work today to see that my transfer case had lost about a quart while I was at work. I had done some wheelin yesterday, so I can't help but feel that it's probably serious. It's been having problems going into 4H anyway, so I might as well replace it.

Due to the short notice, I am shopping for a used one. I have a few questions:

-Are they different depending on which transmission they were originally mated to?

-Searching turns up that there are 23 and 29 tooth models (I'm guessing that that is how many splines on the input). Which do I have?

-Is the NP241HD a viable option for replacement?

-Is there a better option that I could install without dramatically increasing down time? What about NP205? From what I can find it seems to be stronger, and they are plentiful!

-Are there any other NP241 applications that I could potentially use? GM for example?

-Is it possible to get a different NP241 and use my existing adapter?

You need a 29 spline unit, autos are 23. I think Ford's all have 32 spline inputs. Not sure what chevy runs. You could put in a 241DHD or a 271, but you will have to shorten your rear shaft. Front should be ok on the 241DHD, not sure on the 271.

If you're mech inclined, rebuilding a t-case is not very difficult once you get it apart and figure out which parts you need. If you search around, you can find an excellent diagram. Search infidel, I believe he has posted one up a couple of times. If you're losing that much fluid, you may have cracked the case, but if it is just a seal they're not hard to fix. It's worth taking apart and looking at in any case because a used one in good shape will run you $500 and it may only take $150 in parts to put it back together. Plus, you know that one fits your truck.

You will have a number on the T-case tag- there are about 20 different variations of the 241 used. Check www.car-parts.com. This site accesses every parts yard in the US. I live in VA, and the nearest case for mine was in Louisiana. Paid $850, had about 60,000 miles on it, and had a warranty.

Hey, thanks to all for the replies. I got a used, but in excellent condition, t-case off craigslist for $350. I installed it and it works great. Since it's from a '94 it has a different shift pattern than my '98, but no big deal.

I found that there's just a tiny nick in the corner of the old one that was causing the leak, so I'm going to take it apart, weld up the leak, rebuild it and get my money back plus some.
