Need 50 HP

Ok guys said I wouldn't touch this truck but I need about 50 HP this 98 is a dog even with the 4.10s. What do I need to do ??? Don't want to touch the clutch , it should be ok with 50. Also don't want to affect milage is this possible with the star wheel thingy or adj. the fuel plate thingy.

grind ur fuel plate to a number 10 for free(theres lots of threads that can walk u through the procedure), and install a 3gsk for $95 (the kit comes with good instructions) and that should tide u over until u want more. The starwheel and AFC can be moved anytime for alittle extra pre-boost fuel.

What he said...

OR u can also add some 370 injectors, BUT with the combination stated above if you do them both, ull have about 120 extra horses over stock or so... Good bang for the buck.. U could simply add the injectors, or the plate and GSK.. however to get the best benefit out of either, or , or both for that matter... take the truck to get it timed. Anywhere between 15-17 degrees will work....

Also do not forget your gauges if you are gonna add fuel to this fire...

Slide your stock plate forward, and add an adjustable boost elbow. Should give you what you are looking for.
If your not happy with that, go with a #10 plate, and the elbow.
You need to mess with the plate and starwheel thingy to make power.
More fuel=More power.

the stock plate wont help moving it forward, itll screw with your torque curve not good for towing. anything over a mild plate upgrade will send you looking for a new clutch which you clearly stated you dont want to mess with.

And to me, the 4.10's actually decrease the driveability of the truck. The shifts are way to short so all the power is just wasted because it rev's out to quick. The 3.55's let you pull with the lower rpms where all the power is. Believe me, i'm doing everything I can do get my truck geared higher, even if it means having to run 3" spacers so I can use 35" tires, lol.

4.10's arent for cruising, how do 3.55s let you pull with the lower rpms?

I mean the rpm's are alot lower with 3.55's, and each gear is alot taller so u can pull alot longer without ur rpm's reving high. 4.10's are better for towing for sure, but unless u tow heavy, 3.55's are the way to go for driveability.

IMHO

i agree with you, but with a few mods, and a good clutch, even the 3.55's serve their purpose for towing. I have had no problems (see loads in my gallery) with what ive towed with 3.55 gears..

It is also nice to go with 75 mph at 2000 rpms with 355s..

i had 410s in my 93 F250 IDI, and man it was a pullin sonvabuck... BUT at 60 mph, it was wound up at 2000 rpms...

don't have to rub it in Rick, lol jk. If the tire shop lets me put 35x12.5 on my stock 16x6 rims, i'm gonna have 35's and 2.5" or 3" spacers in the rear and hopefully be geared close to 3.55's. I just don't know how a truck can come from the factory with 4.10's and 215/85 tires (i've got 235/85's now), and expect to be able to cruise on the freeway wihtout being at 2500 rpms.

All above are good suggestions but I would go back to the basics to starts with.

You showed 190 K Kms (approx 115 K miles). That seems low for a 98. I would wonder about a lot of short driving and not getting the engine up to temp with a build up of carbon. You may have a clogged catalytic converter (I think all 98's had them) or maybe just an old blocked air filter.

If you add more fuel (plate, injectors, GSK) and the truck still can't breath then you are no better off.

I would check the air filter, have the injectors tested, straight pipe with a 4" exhaust and then see how it runs. Then add above listed items.

I thought they stopped the converters in 97 and what I have is a resonator (sp) , I changed the FF and air filter , maybe I just use to my 02 and think this truck should compare. The truck runs great just slow . I was thinking of doing a 4 inch exaust with a muffler sinse my tale pipe is starting to rot.

I had a build date of 11/97 on my 98 and it had a convertor (don't ask how I know).

I would do the exhaust and air filter first and see. If you do up the fuel you will be glad you did anyway.

Maybe Infidel will chime in. I seriously think he can probably tell us the last truck built with a convertor. He does know these trucks.
