NC fellas, need some help (tranny)

Buddy of mine from South Dakota lost the 5th gear synchro out of his 4500. Obviously he doesn't know shops around here, and I really don't either.

So the question is, anybody know of a decent tranny shop? Preferably around the triangle area, but we can drive it a ways for a good shop if we need to, or if it's too far for a 4th gear road trip, we'll throw it on a trailer behind mine.

Thanks everybody.

i drove mine for a year as a 4spd. it is a pretty easy fix. just order the split nut from any cummins dealer, drop the transfer case and put the new nut on. assuming nothing happend to the gears. that the cheap easy fix think it cost $75 for the nut kit.

Nope, that's not it, he had the nut replaced about a year ago with the lock nut. He's basing his synchro diagnosis off of phone calls with his mechanic back home. Either way, we're really don't have the set up to be tearing it down, so a shop would be really nice, just one he can trust.

He's been driving it with a 4 speed, but with the drive back to SD coming up, with a F-350 tagging along on the trailer, overdrive would be nice.

I sent you a message on thewolfweb, because my account hadn't been validated here. Anyways, Diesel Injection of Cary would be a place to check out.

Even if they couldn't help you out they might know a good shop. Hope that helps man.
