My Health Department says too much black smoke!

Help!

I just received a certified letter from my local health department, they say my truck makes too much black smoke. Here is what I have: 1997 12v Dodge cummins 5spd BONE STOCK 129k miles. I had to take it in and they say that it is 27% opacity and the limit is 20%.

Where should I start!

lol, what state do you live in?

try checking the air filter...
and turn the "starwheel" down or away from the engine.

i know you are kidding, but, opacity is the measured amount of visible particulate. =smoke and soot.

Sorry for the question already! Just never heard the word.

In Sadelia, we describe it as "smoke and soot". If we had a health department, they too would call it "smoke and soot".

Utah, not too many tree huggers here. Just my luck! I am going to check the starwheel and air filter. It was only on WOT. The test lady just about put my tachometer through the roof.

if we ever go to an opacity test, I'll be in the driver's seat or I'll adjust the high speed idle screw (throttle stop) to only allow about 1/2 throttle

if your opacity was bad only on the high end, you can slide the AFC housing and or the plate back... tighten up your star wheel a bunch and you should be smoke-free

what if he just disconnected the line that goes to the AFC housing for the test? like putting it in temp. valet mode..... that should clear up most of the low end smoke.....

Just had an emission test on my new to me 97, in Connecticut it's a 20% limit,,,I passed with 2.2% with no cat and stock fuel plate pushed all the way foward and star wheel turned to the maxh with the housing full foward, they tested it on the rollers at about 1800 rpm,,,,I would go back and contest the way they did the test, explain to them you don,t drive it on the governor full time.
