Re:MY 1996 DODGE DIES WHEN YOU PUT IT IN GEAR
How does it idle in park or out of gear? Idle should be 700-800 with the truck in gear(auto) with the AC on. Check fuel filter ... may be clogged.
.... fill in your signature so we can see what you have. This might help in the diagnosis.

Check you rpms out of gear. If they are too low there, when you place the truck in gear, it will die.
Also check the simple stuff as well (if you havent already):
Fuel filter,
Air filter,
etc.

Rich

Re:My 1996 Dodge 12 valve dies when i put it in gear
it sounds like what my 93 did to me would run fine until i put it in gear and it would chug like it wasnt getting fuel and die! but i would fire it right back up and it would b fine put in gear and die! at that time i had no diesel knowledge so i limped it do the nearist diesel shop with foot have way to the floor to get her to move without dying they looked at it and said the injection pump was out! took it off and sent to get rebuild got a call back from the shop next day and they said it was the worst pump they have seen in the 20 years they have been in business and couldnt beleive how long it ran like that! its probally just something simple like the other guys were saying i thought i would just share cause it just sounded like what im truck was doing!

If it's not something simple it could possibly be the governor not metering the proper amount of fuel to compensate for the load. When the rpms come down from load the fuel rack is supposed to be given more room to travel to increase fuel for the load by the governor... in short... could be a pump problem if it's not something alot more simple.
