Manual fuel shutoff

I was the one who posted last week about losing power in my trruck. Well it turned out to be the shut off solenoid. I was planning on cleaning it up and seeing if that helped but it the rubber boot is dry rotted and it fell apart in my hand springs and everything fell out. I don't want to go and buy a rubber boot and try to put it all back together especially since they say that the relay could be the problem in the first place. I don't want to spend time and money on replacing what is in my opinion a bad setup to begin with. So I am leaning toward putting a manual shutoff on. I have done some reading on here and found that the easiest way to do this is to get the cable from a DT466 IH. Does anyone know where I can find one of these cables and is there any fab work that has to be done to make it work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Adam.

Just my 2 cents worth, but id the boot fell apart in your hands, I'd put another solenoid on it and a relay. Then I'd buy the super contacts for the starter and put it all in. I know the overall investment is much more than you were planning on spending, but in the long run you will be more happy. I think that the manual shut off will just be more troublesome than it's worth. I found the solenoid on e-bay, the relay was on there too. I bought the contacts a a local shop that rebuilds starters and alternators. Overall, I think I have about $200.00 in all of it, BUT I no longer have anymore trouble with the starting system on my truck. Again, like I said, just my 2 cents worth.

your solenoid is fine unless you really want to go manual then just use the bicycle tube trick and it should be fine. if you were stating that you had low power then it had to be the fault of the solenoid hanging partially up, the relay is either on or off.

I did the manual fuel shutoff. Personally I love it. Its nice to be able to take the keys out of the truck and still have it running. I was never a fan of leaving the truck running with the keys in it. Dont have to worry now and with no keys there is now way to steer it so its fairly safe to leave.

I did the manual shutoff too. I just used a 12$ choke cable shortened it to the right lenth. I made a plate with a hole in it just the right size to fit my cable through made it long enough to span the gap where the solenoid used to be mounted and bolted the flat plate across that gap and used the original solenoid bolts to hold it down. Twist the end of the cable around the shut off lever on the pump and a couple of 1/4" rubber coated clamps on either side of the mounting plate to hold the cable from sliding through the plate when you push or pull and mount the T-handle inside the cab. I mounted mine on the bottom of the dash above the brake pedal. No one can start my truck that hasn't been shown where the fuel control is cuz it is kind of hidden. Just my fix for a burned up solenoid without a lot of money.

I really like the idea of the manual fuel shut off. Have I heard correctly that some of the IH dt466 use the inline p7100 pump and the shutoff cable is a direct bolt on?

Like many said, you can probably fix your solenoid. If you want the manual shutoff, here is a list of parts from an International truck dealer.

P/N's from an International Dealership:
$CDN
324877C91 Cable $64.25
109420R2 Swivel $13.44
299399C1 Clamp $0.96
371146C1 **** $5.39
436747 Screw $0.32
363423C1 Nut $3.16
370782C1 Screw $2.57

I personally find the cable to be a bit overbuilt for the purpose - it is relatively stiff, and the shutoff lever needs next to no force to move it (or hold it). A cheaper push/pull (choke) cable should work fine. - you could always move up to the IH cable later. The swivel is great and the proper way to connect the cable to the lever. I don't know if it will work on the "extension" piece attached to the actual lever, I removed some extra parts and welded a bracket to make it a push-on, pull-off setup.

Look at my gallery.
