Man, I'm eating my words - KDP KILLED

I always said it was a myth, it would never happen to me...

After getting the timing cover off, I wiggled the pin and had it fall out (I got it back) - don't know how many miles I had left, 1,000?

Get your pin done!

Peened it back into the case where it will RIP forever...

It may not be a real common problem, but it is a big one, if it happens, and very easily preventable.

Thats exactly what all the uneducated say.

The $50 for the kit includes the tab and seal - $50 is cheap compared to the cost of the repair. People DO know what they are talking about on this site !

Kdp

I agree with everyone else. The cost of an engine is not worth taking a chance over a $50 fix and some time. It is a lot less of a headache knowing it is done and you do not have to worry road trip after road trip.

A not so funny story but.......
A buddy I work with bought a 95 CTD new and since I found this site a few years ago I have been hounding him to pull the cover and check his KDP but you know the story I figured since hes a millwright it should be no big deal right? A couple of weeks ago he tells me his front seal is leaking real bad and needs to change it.... yeah it started over night and there was a slight ticking noise the day before. So right away my I think KDP and hate to tell him "I told you so" but So I tell him hes got to steam clean the front and Ill come over and will take a look. Well he got lucky, the pin fell out and hit a gear and punched a hole in the cover on the way down and spared the case. This truck has 190kms on it and that old pin decided today was the right time to exit. You just never know unless you pull the cover. For my buddy the fix was cheap since we were able to weld the cover up and fish the pin out of the pan with a magnet but the odds are not in your favor.
Moral of the story CHECK YOUR PIN

Lets bow our heads and give thanks to all the trucks that went before the pin was fixed so we would have the knowledge to repair our own.

FWIW, I just did mine @ 239k miles. And I couldn't drive the pin in a micron!

It was still (luckily) that tight. But of course I tabbed it anyway!

Yeh I cant wait to see where the KDP is on this truck at 135,000 miles. I wasnt able to get to napa before they closed after work all week so I cant do it this weekend. I might go ahead and start tearing it down so I can see how far out the dowel is. I took a risk and took it for a spin today....its really hard to let it sit in the driveway.

I got a slightly longer bolt at the hardware store for .65, a fender washer for .10, ground the washer to make my tab, and resealed the case w/ gray RTV...

lot cheaper than $50!
