low power, stalling and white smoke

ok fellas,

I just got back from a 7500 mile trip and the truck ran great. When drivivng it to work this morning it started loosing power. It would fall flat on its face @2000 RPMS. then I would have to down shift to keep going, and then it would blow some white smoke in third gear, then clear up, and die. I would restart it and every thing seem ok, and then it would start agian after a couple miles. I did this all the way home. At idle its fine, and starts and revs fine with no smoke, but when its loosing power, then its blowing some whiteness. '
/any ideas?

Bob. and this is in my 98 12v, 4x4, 5 speed.

I would guess your fuel shut of solonoid (sp?) is dying, it will start to relax and shut off some fuel. My dad had a 97 12v that did it, wouldnt run over 35 mph. He ditched the eletrical and installed a manual cable.

You might try the fuel filter. Mine plugged off and did much the same things you are having. My fuel shutoff solenoid went out once also and it was all stop! No go. So I would try changing the filter first.

Lightbulb Fuel supply problem

Couild also be sucking air in the fuel system. Or collapsing a rubber line.

Common failures include-
hole rubbed in coiled plastic pickup line in in-tank module
cracked or rusted OEM steel fuel lines
hole rubbed in hard lines in "bellhousing" area
internal "flap" in rubber fuel line from hose degenerating
soft hose collapsing, especially at return line, bellhousing, lift pump elbow
air leak at fuel/heater strainer heat element plug
failure of operator to clean/replace screen in fuel/heater strainer
crud in tank blocking super-fine inlet strainer screen (in-tank module)
weak or sticking open overflow valve
lift pump going out

Exclamation filter changed

Thanks for the info VIN.

I finally got the fuel filter changed. working lotz of hours, and being a single daddy dosnt leave for much extra time to work on my trucks any more.

The filter change didnt help anything, except the fact that it was real dirty.

So here is a recap. 1st, and 2nd gear go fine all the way to 3K. In third gear it starts to loose power at 2100 rpms, and starts spittin blue/ white smoke at 2500 rpms. Then it will slow down, and as soon as I put the clutch in, it dies. Stop and it restarts just fine.

I am going to get under there tomorow and check the lines for air.

Could it be my timing? I dint have a lot of extra cash now to through at parts that arent broken now that its just me with my son.

/thanks for all the good advice, and please keep the seggestions coming.

/bob

Sounds like a lack of fuel or sucking air. Try the pre-filter. Maybe install new lines from tank to pump.

if it were timing it should do it in 1st and 2nd. the only reason i am not thinking sucking air is because it starts up fine again. sound more like a lack of fuel. check the pre-filter screen in the fuel heater. its right next to the lift pump

Fuel supply as stated.. I think the rubber lines to the engine are done in and pulling air in at high flow. Simple fix really..

The exact same thing happened to me when I bought my first Cummins back in 2000. It was a '97 12valve, and it was before i was a member here. I called around, and around, and never could get an answer.

It ended up being the pre-filter screen. It was totally clogged up! I cleaned it in some varsol, and blew it out with compressed air, and re-installed. Took probably 20 minutes, and cost me nothing, and it was fixed!!

I would try this first, and then go onto fuel lines from there.
Let us know what comes of it
Phillip

Maybe you dumped oil in your fuel tank.......LOL. Just kidding.

Seems like everyday there is a new thread about someone dumping oil in thier fuel tanks, and now they cant figure out why their truck wont run.
