Lost Boost & Plate Question
Lost Boost & Plate Question
Hey
I have a 98 12v QC SB auto, and last week I finally got around to installing my Autometer Ultra-Lite Guages, my truck is bone stock with a BHAF and, the night I got them in I was driving around and if I punched it I could get the the boost to go up to 22psi then settle in around 20, drove it 2 days later and now if I punch it I see 15psi MAX settles to 14.
From what I've read it's either a kinked boost line or a boost leak which is more likely as the truck doesn't seem to pull as hard higher in the powerband it has been pretty cold here lately (-20C to -30C) but I'm not sure if that would make a difference too? Is there anything else I should check?
On a side note provided any boost leaks are fixed and the tranny is upgraded (thinking DTT havn't made the call yet though) would the stock HX35 cool a #4 plate (stock position) without getting into constant high EGT's? I'll be either straight piped (stock exhaust) or have stacks by then.
Most of the time I will be empty, might carry 1000lbs in the back of the truck from time to time. I kind of want to buy a plate once not a #10 now and a #4 when I go with twins.
Thanks
Devin

I don't know anything else that could be wrong with your boost guage, but with your question about the #4 plate I would think that the stock turbo would deffinently cool it good enough that you wouldn't constanly have to watch your EGT's. There are many guys on here that run a 100 plate and they don't run into EGT problems unless playing. That 1000Lbs in the bed really shouldn't hurt your EGT's that much at all.

Right on bout the 100
an easy spot to check for a boost leak, especially if you have just swapped out your plate is right at the boot where you remove the intake hatt, that one got loose on me not too long ago and i noticed a boost leak, Tighten that clamp up and u should be good to go....

Picking through your post I read you plan on a number of possible upgrades.
Plate
Transmission
GSK
Injectors (delivery valves?)
Turbocharge
A #10, #4, #100, or #0 works best with a GSK. Stock transmission will work with a #10, but not with a #4 or more. A #0 or #100 will get hotter (EGTs) with a stock charger.
Fix that boost leak and decide your upgrades.

I'm hoping to get it inside soon and check it all over as it's too cold to be working outside. I've decided to check the gauge with regulated shop air, inspect all boots, if nothing is obvious pressurize the system with shop air and search for leaks.
I've got a long road ahead of me with this truck, both in paying for it and getting it the way I want it. I might slide the stock plate forward for now, straight pipe it, to save money for a tranny, then do the #4 plate and 3k gsk at the same time, which should be a nice improvement over stock and keep me happy for a while. As always, more fuel and air to cool it as time and money allows (thinking Piers towing twins)
I just wasn't sure on the plate as there's not that much info I've been able to find about it.
Thanks guys
