Lifting Engine

My 97's oil pan has seen better days. The Michigan winters are taking it's toll with rust, and the gasket is starting to leak as well. So I figure it is time for a new pan and gasket. I guess the Cummins dealer is the best place for those parts (unless someone else knows of another source).

I have searched and read the oil pan removal posts and pretty much got that. But my question is with lifting the engine. I do not have a hoist, so I will need to use a jack and jack stands.

My problem is I have no idea where to place the jack for the lifting the engine? My luck is I would put it in a place that would prevent me from slipping the pan out. Any tips on location and lifting that thing?

If I have things straight, I need to remove fan shroud bolts, remove the back 3 valve covers, loosen (or remove) the trans (auto) bolts to the crossmember, and then the bolts on the engine mounts.

Am I missing anything? Location of the jack is really my main concern so any tips/advice is appreciated. KD

I would suggest using a bottle jack and loosen the motor mount bolts up.
Jack the motor until the rubber mounts on the engine are about out of the mounting tabs on the frame, just up top of the mounting tabs, then wedge wood between the mounting blocks and the frame.. and remove ur jack.

OK on the bottle jack. As far as placement of the jack, under each engine mount? Lifting a little at a time on the mounts going back and forth (moving from one side to another?)?

Would it be better to have two jacks one under each mount? Thanks for the reply. KD

This is how I did it on my 24 valve.
Remove the fan and fan shroud.
Unhook the air intake's.
Loosen, but do not remove the 2 engine mount bolts.
I used an engine hoist to raise it up, I raised it up till the valve cover hit the cab.

Take out all the pan bolts, loosen and remove the oil pickup tube bolts and drop the pickup into the pan. At this point the pan should just slip out.

However you wind up lifting it, do it safely, your going to have that engine up off the mounts by a good 4 or 5 inches.

No, I placed the jack on the pan right near the front cover. So most of the pressure was on the front cover IIRC

Yes, after I took a good look I realized there is no way to get the jack on the mounts. JD, I have no hoist, that is why I asked about other methods. I am a little nervous about a jack on the pan, but, I guess I am doing this to replace the pan anyways.

So a jack on the pan near the front of the timing gear housing? BTW, my truck is a 2 wheel drive in case that matters. Thanks, KD
