98.5 Oil Pan replacement

Hey guys,

I need to replace the oil pan on my 1998.5 24V Cummins, 2wd. I've been trying to find info on what all is involved with this? Do you have to loosen some of the engine mounting bolts and jack the engine up a bit to get some room to get the pan out? What other things might need to come off?

Any suggestion as to where to purchase a new pan?

Thanks,

Dan

you have to raise the engine or drop the transmission. I'm interested in others experiences of what they actually had to remove- Mine needs one this summer too.

The last one I did all I did was loosten the motor mount bolts and jack up the engine....when you get the engine jacked up enough to clear the crossmember or front diff. if 4 wheel drive and drop the pan enough to reach the bolts you will need to take out the bolts that hold the oil pickup tube to the bottom of the block and take it out with the pan. If memory serves there are 2 bolts with 10mm heads that go to to the bottom of the block and if I remember right there is a bracket with a nut....I think that nut is a 13mm... that will go to one of the main bearing caps about halfway down the block. Also you will want to take loose either the fan or fan shroud, that will give you a little extra room to jack the engine up without damaging anything.

As to getting the pan I think the best place is either the dodge house or straight from cummins, with cummins probably having better service and being a little cheaper.

Like I said in another post...

Pan from cummins $75

Gasket $30

Lifting the engine to do it.

priceless!

The pans are made from a very thin gauge metal. In the "salt belt" you're looking at 10-12 years.
