Lift Pump Issues - 1997 Cummins

My son has a 1997 Dodge Ran 2500 with 12 valve cummins engine. His truck will run for about 45 - 50 seconds if he manully pumps the plunger adjacent to the lift pump, then it dies.

He beleives the lift pump is going out. He would like to fix it in the least expensive manner, as he has listed it for sale in next weeks paper.

He has cleaned fuel tank, replaced the fuel, changed filters twice and still has the same results.

Can someone confirm that this is a lift pump problem. Also, can someone advise of the best place to get a replacement lift pump and let me know of part number and what price these normally cost.

Thanks

Sorry- I incorrectly posted this in the 24 valve forum.

Sounds like a lift pump, but it could be air in the fuel lines or leaky fuel lines...

The engine seems to be losing prime if it won't run...

Did you crack the injector lines to see if any fuel comes out while cranking?

Yes - He did crack the lines and if you prime it by hand, fuel does come out.

Any suggestions on locating a replacement pump.

Thx

it will not start without using the hand pump. If you use the hand pump, it will start pretty quickly, then run about 45 -50 seconds then die.

thx

Cummins has the best deal on lift pumps, about $80.
Sorry don't have a part number but it should be no problem, the same pump was used for many years in many different applications.
