leaking oil

My bro called said his '98 12v leaking oil by injection pump. I suspect killer dowel pin? How bad do you think this is, truck still runs good but he says leaking oil pretty bad. We plan to tear into it tomorrow and see.

Good luck. The dowel pin usually cracks the side opposite the pump I think.

this is what you'll be looking at with the front cover off. the dowel is directly above the cam gear. but before you go ripping the cover off. diagnose the leak properly. cleanup the area, brakecclean, powerwash whatever you got. and pinpoint the leak. its probably not be the KDP at all. but wouldn't hurt to kill it while you're rooting around there.

If it's leaking in the vicinity of the injection pump I would want to take a long hard look at he vacuum pump, they are famous for leaking and are right under the pump. Best bet is to clean the engine as good as possible and take a long hard look at it.

pulled the timing cover off the dowel pin was in it's home snug as a bug. but the timing case had some small cracks in it at some of the bolt holes. The cracks we found were not where the leak is. we haven't tore into it any farther I have never timed one or these before. plan to pull the aluminum housing and tig the cracks. But only after I learn a little more about timing a diesel.

The odd thing is this truck came from brother in law and was always serviced at dealer in harrison. He had taken it in for an oil leak from around the timing cover a few years ago, and when we pulled it apart yesterday there were little beads of silicone all over the timing cover. I think they hammered in new pin and siliconed the cracks and charged my brother in law for doing the job right. No proof just my thoughts, I know for sure their service dept. is inept from past experience.

if you're pulling the gearcase you have to pull the cam. thats kind of a chore on its own. make sure you have the right tools on have to do it. I use gsket eliminator on the cover too. no gasket. silicone is kind of cheesy but they might have been going for th same effect.
