Leaking delivery valve ???

Noticed more and more smoke over the last couple of days. Popped the hood this am and did some looking around. There is quite a bit of fuel leaking from the base of the #6 delivery valve. Pulled the DV, everything looks good. Recent stainless steel washer (thanks McMopar), looks good. Rubber gasket is a bit chewed up. All surfaces in the IP and on the DV look clean and smooth...Put the DV back in, torque to spec (29# then 85#), hook up fuel lines, start and it's leaking more...

What can I, or should I do? Can't imagine that torqueing the DV down more is gonna gain me anything...Can't be loosing this much fuel...Don't like the amount of smoke...How do I make this thing quit leaking?

Just put a new one in...not the fancy green ones but used a black plumbing one of the same size...still leaking, though much less.

Any other ideas? It's leaking worse today. No chance of getting over to Cummins today (over an hour drive away) for the o-ring. But, I need to get this taken care of. What is causing it to leak?

Only a guess on my part but was the "plumbing" o-ring diesel fuel compatible. Maybe it rotted out faster than the old on.

I would get the right part, recheck torque and make sure the top of the DV holder that mates with the fuel line is clean and isn't scored up.

O.K. the plumbing o-ring has been on for less than 24 hours. The DV holder was leaking with the old chewed up, green, Cummins, o-ring. I put the plumbing o-ring on and it leaked right away. Not as much as with the chewed up O-ring and certainly much less than with no O-ring.

I have a hard time believing that the O-ring is what keeps these things from leaking. The IP is pushing fuel to about 14K#'s there...No way an O-ring is gonna keep that. It would appear that the seating of the DV holder onto the washer at the bottom of the hole would be where I'm leaking (only place I can figure). So, why all of a sudden is this leaking. The SS washer is less than 5k miles old, was torqued to spec (as per the TSM) when new, looks good now, but I'm now leaking?????

I would have to agree with you about the 0-ring. Probably not the problem.

By your description is the leak from under the fuel-line hold down nut, the delivery valve hold down assembly or is it from under the adjustment for the plunger/barrels? You didn't loosen up the hold-downs on the barrels did you?

You said the DV holder and DV look good (no scratches, etc). Maybe recheck them again and the fuel line connection. You can always swap the leaking DV around to see if it is the pump seat leaking or the DV. I'm also against more torque, but that is what it might take.

Let us know how it comes out.

Didn't mess with the 2 14mm nuts on either side of the DV. The leak is coming up the side of the DV holder, not from around the fuel line or fuel line hold down nut.

I'll pull it again and do some more swapping around. See if I can isolate if it's the barrel, washer or DV holder...

I need help now too

Does

anyone have the part number for the little O rings? That might be the problem with mine... WHen i swapped to full cuts the O ring was yellow and completely fried... Im gonna try swapping it out to see what it does,

anyways more on the symptoms, the fuel leak is coming right from the base where the DV meets the actual body of the IP. not the hold down nut, I have already confirmed that....

anyone got anymore ideas?

Rick

I'm seeing the same thing as Rick, I have some seepage where the DV/barrel assembly meets the pump body. I don't want to just tighten things down and hope it quits though. It is just barely creating some moistness after a few hundred miles or so... Anybody find a fix for this?
