Lacking power

I didnt have anything to compare my trucks power to till I drove my friends
stock 1996 yesterday and it has a ton more power then mine. Then on the way home I hit the freeway and floored it doing 50 MPH up a small hill and got nothing. I know this truck isn't a nitro burning funny car, but I should be getting more then what I currently have.

The truck starts great, Idles great, does not blow smoke. I have changed both fuel, and pre-filter. I do not have gauges so it make it hard to solve. That's my next big purchase. I did notice a air wooshing sound when I come off the accelerator when I floor it. Does this sound normal?

From what I have been reading it may be a overflow valve, or my AFC diaphram/line that could be the problem. Does it sound like I'm on the right track? I really don't have the funds to take this in to get fixed. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the startup solenoid, and see if its pulling "ALL" the way up...Mine slipped...it would run,but had no power up a hill and would hardly smoke...If you want, disconnect the solenoid from the pump and wire the pump solenoid lever all the way up...Maybe someone cranked the AFC star screw all the way back...somethings to check...

Opps missed something....Does it blow heavy black smoke??

Start with the simple stuff, change the fuel filter and service the pre-filter.

If the filters are clean next step would be to measure fuel pressure.

If a gauge isn't possible replace the overflow valve, if that doesn't work replace the lift pump.

You need a turbo boost gauge. No boost = no power. What is your boost? You could easily have an induction system leak.

Ya gauges are next. I took the truck to a diesel shop and that was a waste of money. They didn't check the boost or fuel presure lime I had asked. I hate shops!

You said you heard air "whooshing"? Check your charge-air-cooler clamps and hoses, you could have a broke clamp or a busted hose. Next, look at the charge-air cooler, it might be split.

Yes, check the "soft" hoses for splits and make sure the clamps are tight.

Whooshing sound is the turbo barking, I bet. He said it happens when he lets out of heavy throttle.

Go buy a cheap liquid filled pressure gauge and do fuel pressure test. The gauge will be much cheaper than either a OFV or LP. You just need to take no load tests at idle and 2500 rpm to see if your pressure is in spec.

On a side note, if you do remove your shut off solenoid, you don't need to wire it up. It is automatically in the run position.
