KDP question
I have two questions regarding the KDP.
1) What exactly is the dowel pin for?
2) What does the bolt do, which holds the washer needed to keep the dowel in place? Does removing this bolt to install the washer cause any issues?

1) the pin locates the timing case on the front of the engine.
2) there are no worries there. Remove bolt, install tab on it, reinstall both with loctite on it. Many, many trucks have been fixed this way - theres no issue here.

When you are in there you should re torque the bolts holding case on. But you need to remove them, clean the hole and bolt(I used brake cleaner) apply loctite. Then re torque. I did one bolt at a time.
