If you are not planning to, I would put the pin back in. It helps support the case and keeps it aligned.

For what its worth, my case cracked about 4-5 inches long from where the case cracked on the outside up toward the pump. Was fairly ugly. This was even at idle when I heard the pin fall at startup. Just imagine running down the road with it falling out. Ive seen the cases on ebay for 50$, but you wont find that good of a deal when you need it though. And for fan removal just put a smaller pipe wrench on the nut and get it a smack with the belt still installed.

turn it cw. i didnt have a wrench either i left the belt on and put slight pressure on the pulley with a prybar wedged between it and the block and a big pair of channel locks on the fan. came right off.

I have read somewhere, Ill have to search for it, but some people get by with pullin the cam gear and than heatin it to put it back on.

I just got finish with repairing my truck correctly, at first I did a temporary repair with JB weld and seemed to bond well when I first did it But when my new case came in and I removed the old case the peice that was JB welded in poped out without much effort.
I pulled the gear off the camshaft and then heated it back up to slip it back on, Not too bad to do
