I've heard many report it as an all day job, but it would only have taken me 4 hours or so if I wasn't doing other things at the same time (replacing driver's motor mount, performing a lash adjustment, waiting for gaskets, etc). It's been a few months since I did it, but to the best of my recollection I removed the radiator and fan shroud, and removed the fan by unbolting the fan pulley from the block. I removed the crank speed sensor, and removed the timing cover. Keep track of which bolts went where in the timing cover, as there are a number of different length bolts that hold it together.

I took some scrap aluminum, and made my own tab with a sawzall, drill press, and a bench top belt sander. This process took me all of 10 mins.

While I had it apart I went ahead and replaced the timing cover seal and the front main seal while I was at it. For $35 it seemed like a no brainer.

I put it back together, adding silicone gasket sealer to BOTH sides of the gasket just as a precaution, despite the fact that Cummins only uses it on one side of the gasket. Seemed like a small step to take to make sure that I didn't have to pull it apart again.

I got the kit from TST, it would of been around a 3.5-4hr job but messed up the crank seal when we were putting it back on so it ended up being a all weekend job. I think if I were to do it again I could do it in about 3hrs. Its pretty straight foward job.

Fair enough, i'll do it tomorrow after work. Just hope nothing is messed up inside of there. My truck been leaking more and more oil the last couple of weeks, just hope I didn't do any damage and some new seals stop the leaking oil.

Ditto the doing a LOT of other things that stretched out the total time involved!

ALso ended up having to make a tool to get dadblasted fan clutch off..... but things went well. Read well the instructions on the crank seal, it is EASY if done right - but wretched if you try to do it wrong, and that seal is fragile.

I got a lot of cleaning and inspection done in the process, as well as many hoses that are MUCH easier to access and replace when the fan assembly etc is out of the way

One word of warning - that cast aluminum timing case has a milled sealing surface that is ultra sharp. Take care in handling and cleaning it - you WILL be leaving blood on the metal. You won't even feel most of them until the hand cleaner gets into the cuts

I think you got lucky. Could have been MUCH worse...

If you weld it and warp the cover, you may have a hard time getting a decent seal again. I'd be prone to come up with a new cover and not worry about leaks later on - Cummins parts are a LOT cheaper than Dodge dealer parts, BTW.
