Just pulled the head; what else should I do?

Had a tiny head gasket leak near the #1 cylinder and thermostat housing. I finally got the head off today. A mechanic that my stepdad (a heavy equipment mechanic himself) trusts is going to look at it tomorrow to recommend just a gasket or see if other work is needed.

My truck has long ago had the timing bumped to 15.5 degrees and the fuel plate shoved forward. There aren't yet any transmission upgrades done to the 47RE, which is why I never cared to do anything else to the motor beyond aFeII intake and ATS exhaust manifold.

But since the injectors are out, should I consider bigger ones? Will it hurt the transmission with sensible driving? I'm old enough not to care about winning drag races, but I do tow trailers on occasion. I take it out of overdrive on hills when I do.

What else should I do while I'm this far into it anyway? I've got 227,000 miles on it.

I would do valve springs....and a gsk{4000} . I would also open up the exhuast ports and match to the exhuast manifold. You can open it up a bit too. Pretty easy work and hour maybe. Since you had a leak...I d consider a quick surface to the head and I would put studs in....but I know they are pricey and probably not needed at all for a fairly stock truck.

For towing you ll like the extra rpm going up and down hills...with the springs and gsk.
