Just bought my first Dodge Cummins truck
Just bought my first Dodge Cummins truck
It is a 96 ext cab LB. Previous owner put a Garrett turbo, oversize injectors, and cam plate on it. It has 285's, tow package, and <5k on a new a/t. 140k
I have never seen it as it is in California and I am on the east coast. A very knowledgeable mechanic friend who has a 91 Dodge Cummins with 460k+ on it picked it out for me and bought it with my $$.
What do I need to know or do to it before i fly out to Cali and drive it back here?

since the previous owner did some modding, there is a good chance he knew about the "Killer Dowel Pin" . You might want to ask the previous owner if he had it "tabbed" so it wouldn't slip off into the timing gears. Otherwise you need to get that taken care of pretty quick lest serious damage could occur. TST has a nice kit with the new crankshaft seal to tab the pin. Do a little search on here for "KDP" or Killer Dowel Pin. Also here is a nice link from Pavement Sucks on repairing it. KDP Repair

Gauges would be good. Keep an eye on the egt's.
Before driving any vehicle long distance, check all fluids, all suspension components, batteries, and tires, including spare. With that mileage, I'd replace belts and hoses, if it hasn't been done. Carry at least 1 spare fuel filter.
Good luck with the "new" truck, those were the best year

Thx, Racer. This will be my second cross country
trip in a vehicle purchased by this friend. When my daughters graduate from 3d grade they get a cross country trip with dad in some kind of vehicle--just the 2 of us--Mom and Sis get left behind. Last time (2001) it was a classic '70 GMC Sierra Grande 2wd.
We drove all the way across the country and did not even burn a quart of oil! I have been driving the truck 8-10k miles per year since 2001 and it is still very solid. This friend of mine has a great deal of credibility with me--if the truck were on fire and he said I could make it home, I would leave. Thanks for the tips.
