I have an intermittent shut down problem on 97 Dodge Diesel. I turn the key off and the beast just keeps on running. It only happens every now and then and thats what is driving me crazy. After searching the posts I'm guessing that it is one of the following three items, but how do I figure out which one?
1. Fuel Shutdown Solenoid
2. Fuel Shutdown Relay
3. Battery Connections
I checked the boot on the solenoid - it looks okay and the solenoid seems to travel up and down with a nice tight spring action to it. I cleaned all the connectors at the battery, but there is no blue wire. I think a repair shop chopped and reconnected new wires at the battery because of corrosion a while back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

When it won't shutdown. ck that the sol did release. on mine the shaft had sliped on linkage I had to flip the linkage with my finger a few times then it would shutdown I found the woodrif key missing on shaft. but if the sol is not releaseing you must ck elect sys and starter circuit. DC.

 

The problem is your starter contacts. Replace them soon or you'll burn up your $200 shutdown solenoid. In the meantime learn where the connector is for the shutdown solenoid is so you can unplug it in a hurry if the engine runs on.
