Is money better spent on a cam, injectors, pump work, turbo, ported head, etc...............................heck yeah.

Is there something to be gained from an aftermarket air horn on a p-pump 12 valve? Sounds like John P and infidel are the only ones to find out.

GLHS:

Thanks for all your replies and input to this thread Sir!

In response to your last post, I re-read the OP's first post and did not see where he "asked about a twin ram." But,....he did mention Banks so maybe that is what he meant. FWIW,....DTR Member signature600 (Chris) who is a friend of mine has also done testing on some of these aftermarket parts and also had a Dodge CTD 12 valve for awhile. Chris is real knowledgeable guy and has been around diesels a long time.

I also wanted to add to my earlier post that of the three (3) intake manifolds
that I tested and tried, one of them WAS the Banks Twin Ram and I actually LOST power with that intake! All of my testing of the intakes was done on chassis dynos, so the results should be pretty accurate.

Let me reiterate to the OP that IMO,....the aftermarket intake manifolds are a waste of money when you weigh what they cost versus what they deliver.

All good stuff. love to learn, hope to soon find out some of these things firsthand.Gotta solve a fuel delivery problem first on my stocker. Man I cant believe some of the HP and TQ #'s on some of these motors, absolutely awsome. I was sold on diesel performance about a year ago when I was behind a Ram at a red light,It was def. a 24V 5.9, the light went green and this guy started pulling away normally, at about 20 MPH I saw a stream of smoke Heard a roar mixed with the soud of squealing tires and this Dude was gone, I could see the thick black rubber strips left on the road at least 50' long. I was impressed, and surprised at the same time,Sold. Mine is for haulin firewood and pokin in the woods, but I am already researching turbos and so on, I mean sooner or later I'll be able to convince the wife the old stock turbo is on the fritz and I need a new one.LOL.

Correct John P,

Not sure if he has a 12 valve or a 24 valve based on the little avatar.

The 24v 2nd gen ones are about the best stock air horns out there; aren't they?

Let me first Welcome you to DTR! Glad to have you aboard Sir!

Second, you are right,.....these Dodge CTD Pickups and the mighty Cummins 5.9 Engine can really be cranked up to make some serious H.P. and TQ. and I am living proof of that! But with that being said,....I consider myself a "bottom feeder" compared to some of the other Dodge CTD trucks that are on the road and even drag racing. I can remember a day when 500 RWHP seemed almost "unattainable" and now you rountinely see Dodge CTD pickups
hitting 1,000 H.P. or more at the many dyno events around the U.S.!

Anyway, I enjoyed reading your post and appreciate your enthusiasm Sir!
Good luck to you and let us know if we can help you.

There are minor differences between the 12 and 24 valve air horns and I have heard some say the 24 valve design is a little better too.

Thanks for all of the post everyone. From what I gather then....I won't waste my money on the aftermarket intake manifold and spend my money elsewhere.

Save the money on aftermarket air intake filter kits too, even tho so many hear love the BHAF and other cold air mods- dyno testing in a TDR issue (available on Gino's website) proved without a doubt the gains were minimal in all aspects over the stock box and filter, and some even performed worse (decreasing numbers) especially when opened to hot air under the hood.

Quite an interesting read just as this thread has been.

Top red line is a BHAF with heat shield.
Bottom blue line is a stock box drawing air from a hole cut in the firewall described here> http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/ge...ck-airbox.html
Middle lines are stock box variations.
As you can see the BHAF is the worst as far as heat goes.
The BHAF will allow more air to pass but it takes major hp just for the stock setup to be restrictive enough to cause performance problems.

Good reading for all- I saw that graph- and true- stock air box (in 2nd gen anyway) is good up to 500HP.

Don" waste your money on the after market intakes once you build 30psi pressure it feeds from both ends of the head same temp.
