Injector Pump needs replacement
I had my truck (the 96 5 speed in my sig) into the shop for new shocks and asked the guy to take a look at how my truck was running and he told me I need a new injector pump. What are the symptoms of a failing injector pump? I believe he's full of Edit.
The truck has been running fine or at least the same since I bought it in 2007 with 72K miles on it. I messed with the starwheel several years ago to get my low end grunt, but nothing else other than a no. 10 plate and 3K governor spring kit. I did put in a new SouthBend clutch last summer.

I don't know I have really ever seen a 96 up pump fail. The 94-95 had some issues with out of round on the barrels, and if you would see an issue with a newer one, I would say it would be a miss due to one of the barrels not pumping.
Let's just say there are 40 things to cause it to run wrong to every 1 that the pump would cause.......
If you want to diagnose it, you will need to make sure filters/pre-filter is clean, and get us a fuel pressure reading at idle and going down the road.

I wouldn't worry about that, it is most likely not the pump....but we cannot rule that out unless we know the symptoms.

Take it to another shop.
From your post it sounds like you doubt the mechanics judgement. In that case a second opinion is needed. An injector pump is an expensive part to replace especially if it isn't needed.
If the motor runs strong and smooth and sounds right when idling then I doubt there's anything wrong with the pump. If it's missing then look to the injector(s) as well.
I just bought a rebuilt pump for mine which I'll be swapping out soon. I messed mine up while replacing the gov spring and a rebuilt pump at this stage is easier at this point in my life.
