Injector lifespan

My truck has 185k on the stock injectors. I've been doing some reading and it seems like when they are toast they hang open and take the engine with them. How many miles are to many and is it always catastrophic when they wear out?

Typically, the ones that hang open and destroy engines are in the common rail, since they are constantly supplied by high pressure fuel. Our engines don't face that risk. A stuck injector will cause poor running, but won't wreck and engine. They will get dirty and have poor atomization, as well as lose pop off pressure. You can take them to an injection shop and have them cleaned and reset, or buy new ones.

Thats good to know, thanks. The '94 puts out a good amount of gray smoke idling and I was concerned that i might end up destroying it.

I put 570k on mine before I replaced them. I attribute the longetivity to NOT using any additives.

That's cool to see a truck with that many miles on it.Kind of off topic but I have to agree with you on the additives thing. We started using MANTEK fuel additve at work in out fleet and everything sounds like it has a dead cylinder and they make odd colored smoke. The only good it did was make them start better on those below zero mornings we have in the winter.

I've got 260,000 miles on my stock injectors. I do use a bit of veggy oil for added lubricity but that's about all I've ever used regularly.

The only thing I use is 2 cycle oil and sometimes a quart or two of fresh 5w30 that I get from work.

It only lasts for about a 3 week period a year. The coldest we saw this last February was -12f and it didn't get above 15f for a week. We also got 3ft of snow that same week.
