I broke my trany, should I buy new or used?
My NV4500 died a few weeks ago. I have priced remanufactured tranys for anywhere from $1000 to about $2200. I'd be into what ever one I choose another $300 for shipping and core return.
I know where I can buy a complete '94 truck that has been wrecked (trailer jack knifed and smashed the passanger side of the cab) for about $1500. The truck has about 300,000 miles. It has been sitting for about a year. I went and put the jumper cables on it and it started right up. Seems to drive fine. I asked the owner if he had ever had anything done to the truck. He told me that about 2 years ago he had the transmission rebuilt. It had lost 5th gear, he had the whole thing rebuilt when it was fixed. (he has no idea that I need a transmission)
My thoughts...Down side to the whole truck, used unknown transmission plus a lot of work. How long will it last?
Up side, I get a transmission that *might* be rebuilt and in good shape, plus a ton of parts I can sell and get most if not all of my money back.
The new transmission will cost about the same, but I get a 12 month unlimited mile warranty.
Your thoughts or input??

Buy the truck and part it out, use the tranny, sit on the money.
And if you're really worried about the used tranny, then use the money to buy a reman, and sell off the used one.
What exactly happened to your "broken" tranny?

I lost all gears except 4th. I have been told it is the "cluster gears". I don't know what they are, but the rebuilder I was talking to said more than likeley there was other dammage as well.
Thanks for the input guys, I had about decided on the whole truck deal. I may just keep the engine, kill the KDP, replace gaskets and have a good spare. I think I can about sell the axle's and transfercase for close to what I will have in the truck. I assume I will have a D60 front, what about the back?

All manual trans trucks came with the Dana 80. You'll sell it in a heartbeat if it's a limited slip differential (posi).
D70's were only on auto trans single rear wheel trucks.
