how to tell if there is any kdp damage?
I'm looking at a 98 12v, how can I tell if there is any KDP damage to it? Like, if the dowel pin has already fallen out. Common sense tells me that it wouldn't be driveable, and that **** would have definitely hit the fan, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

They usually break through the gear housing right under the bracket where the cooling fan bolts to the engine. Also look straight down from that point to see if there's a big pool of oil on the ground.
