how to remove engine
I searched but couldnt get the answer I was looking for. I am pulling my 96 12 valve to insert into the F350 I just bought. How do I keep the chain on the hoist from bending the cowl on the truck when lifting the motor up? Do I have to use one of those leveling bars?
Someone has surely pulled a motor so please help. The 7.3 power joke died so I must switch motors sooner than planned. thank God for the P7100

Last month when I swapped engines in my 97 I pulled the #6 valve cover off and worked it around the cowl. That was a bad motor so I didn't really care if we got dirt in it or anything, but you could always put a bag or somthing lower profile in place of the cover. Before we pulled the valve cover off, it was hitting the cowl pretty good and I don't think we could have gotten it out otherwise without bending the cowl).
I have also heard that loosening the front cab bolts will allow you to lift the cab slightly to clear the cowl. Never tried this so I can't verify, but the valve cover definitely helped.
Hope this helps,
John

The engine is front heavy when its supported by the motor mounts. You can leave it, but I've put a trolley jack and block on the damper just to keep the engine from sagging too far forward. Its only about 50 lbs. imbalance.
