HMMM Mystery problems

Now that I have drove my new/old truck a bit here is what I notice. When on the high way doing 110kph the tach running just under 2K the truck will lurch foreward with power while the tach drops. The speed increases slightly & this lasts for only a few seconds. Almost as if it dropped down a gear except the tach doesn't go up but down. What could it be? The other thng I noticed today on the high way was that the temperature gauge that generally sits at 1/3 rose to over a 1/2 then dropped back to what it would be when not running & than back to where it usually sits. Did this several times today. The truck has 433,000kms on it. Maybe the temperature sensor needs replacing? BTW where is the temperature sensor? Thanks

Is it an auto? The lurching could be the torque converter locking up, but I wouldnt think that would make it lurch. Not sure.

Maybe someone else will chime in.

Yes it is the auto. I think it is the lock up is letting go too. It feels like it has lots of power when it does it.

What do you mean by new/old truck? Did it just get some work done or what?

Whoops it's a '96 Ram 2500 with the 47Re tranny. Forgot to mention that.

Its probably what your saying about the tc locking then unlocking...it should stay locked though unless you hit the brake or something. Maybe its a loose wire? Not sure about that one.

As far as your temperature gauge goes, how far down does it go when you say "what it would be when not running" like all the way down to 0? then back up to 1/3rd the way?

Yes it went down to zero & then back to a 1/3 which for the cold air out tonight would be normal. Kinda like a gremlin in the truck as I filled it up tonight & the fuel gauge worked normal & stayed normal. Yet when I picked up the trucked & filled it up the gauge went to half & then back to empty & then the low fuel light came on. It didn't go over half way. Like I said tonight it went full & has stayed there as if it is working just fine.

It shouldn't drop that low, even if its cold. I would say check your thermostat and/or replace it......

But with the issue of your temp gauge all over the place, your tc locking/unlocking and the fuel gauge not reading correctly, sounds like electrical gremlins. It could be the same think causing all 3 issues. Is there anything else the trucks doing thats out of the ordinary?

No just those 3 things. As for the tranny I am taking over to a tranny shop where the guy is my buddy. i would change the temp sensor if I knew where it was. Fuel gauge, well I was looking at the owners & mileage & it appears the truck may have sat for 5 years.

The temp sender on a '96 is internal and part of the valve body.
That's probably not your problem anyway, sounds more like the TPS.
